The BC Salmon Marketing Council joined BC’s wild seafood industry to host BC MLAs at a networking reception in Victoria on May 15th, 2019. The event is designed to facilitate discussion about important topics among politicians, fishermen, processors and other representatives from BC’s wild seafood industry.

Hosted by the BC Seafood Alliance, this years event focussed on the following challenges facing the wild seafood industry in BC - pressure to end the roe herring fishery, the reduction of access to Northern habitats for commercial fishermen, the protection of Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKW) and Chinook Salmon, and changes to West Coast licensing policy.

BC Salmon Marketing Council Chair and Organic Ocean President Dane Chauvel shared his thoughts about the evening.

"I thought the entire day was a success. BCSA had organized in-person meetings with influential members of the Cabinet and their assistants which afforded industry a rare opportunity to outline those opportunities and challenges facing our commercial wild capture fisheries. The response was impressive as we were assured that this government shares our interest in maintaining the viability of our commercial fisheries, both environmentally and economically.”
