Fishing Methods
Aboriginal people also fish salmon
for food and ceremonial purposes using methods both contemporary and
traditional - from
seines and gillnets to spears, hooks, fishwheels, dipnets and weirs. In
some cases, salmon from Aboriginal fisheries is also sold.
Many Aboriginal people are also commercial fishermen - about one third
of all salmon licence holders are Native and the fishing industry
is the largest single source of jobs for BC's Aboriginal peoples.
Many British Columbians - well as many tourists - love to fish for salmon.
Besides individual sports fishermen, the recreational fishery is also big
business with many charter and fishing lodge operations concentrated in the
Gulf of Georgia and increasingly in more remote places like the
Queen Charlotte Islands.
